January 27th, 2005 is Family Literacy Day
Parents are their children’s first and most important teachers! Family
Literacy Day is a special day set aside to celebrate parents’ central
role in their children’s learning. Your community can use Family Literacy
Day to raise awareness of the important role that families play in helping
their children develop language and literacy skills, as well as a strong
personal and cultural identity.
The Nunavut Literacy Council will be sending out the following materials
to help communities recognize Family Literacy Day:
- Nutaraqsiutit: a collection of traditional & modern
Inuktitut children’s songs - includes a CD of songs performed
by children & adults from various Nunavut communities & a songbook
with lyrics for each song.
"Our Language – A Gift From Our Parents" white
boards and pens
- Malaija and Taipana Help Anaana Tell Stories,
a family activity book
- Family Literacy promotional material from ABC Canada
Your group may want to sponsor a community event in which families can
celebrate together. The ABC materials and the NLC pencils, books and white
boards can be used as prizes and give-aways. Please call Gorretti Panika
at the Nunavut Literacy Council office in Rankin Inlet (867) 645-5512 to
request more copies of Nutaraqsiutit. You are welcome to make copies
of the Nutaraqsiutit CD and songbook to give to families.
Tell the Nunavut Literacy Council about your Family Literacy Day event
and we will enter you in ABC Canada’s Munsch Sweepstakes. Your group
could win an autographed CD Love You Forever: The Best of Robert Munsch.
Please call Gorretti Panika (867) 645-5512 by January 31 to tell us about
your event.
Enjoy celebrating Family Literacy Day in your community!
